Abstract: What is the current state of local journalism?
Lead Paragraph:
This graph was previously published in a New York Times Opinion article about the decline in the number of local news outlets (newspapers, local digital sites, public radio newsrooms or ethnic publications) in the United States. As of 2023, of the 3,143 counties in the United States, there are 204 counties with no news outlets and 1,562 counties with only one outlet. Areas with insufficient news coverage are called “news deserts.”
